Ring of Death Towel Trick
Having an Xbox, I’m sure you heard your friends talk about the RROD, or red ring of death and ways of fixing it, like the Towel Trick. The “trick” behind the Towel Trick is that you wrap a towel around your Xbox so it gets hot enough to somehow get rid of the red ring of death. Here is the hard truth. Yes the towel trick can work, but, and there is a but. But it will only work for a few weeks and you end up damaging your Xbox so that it may never work again. Keep reading and I’ll explain to you in more detail.
This is why you get the red 3 flashing lights: it has to do with the solder underneath the chips. Microsoft decided to try and save money by using a cheaper material for the solder that was better for the environment, but the quality wasn’t as good. If you remember in chemistry class, when metal is heated up, it expands. This is what happens with the soldering joints when the Xbox is on for long periods of time, the soldering joints expand. It’s supposed to expand with heat, but the issue has to do when it cools down. When it cools, it forms these air bubbles that cause weak spots called cold solder joints. Just like a computer is supposed to heat up and cool down, it creates a crack under the chips with cause the red ring of death.
This is why the Xbox 360 towel trick will just make things worse.
The way the towel trick works is that it gets too hot and the solder melts, but it also creates more issues like more air bubbles. These hairline cracks are large enough so that current doesn’t pass through to the chips.
Fix your Xbox the correct way with the 360FixKit system.
