Can I use home theater system speakers instead of TV speakers with my ipod??

I purchased an AV cable connection for my Ipod classic to connect to TV.It works great but the only problem is that i dont know how to use the home theater system speaker to work.When i see the tv i use the home theater speakers instead of the tv speakers but when i change the selected input to video 1 which is for the ipod no sound, i only get sound from tv speakers but i want the sound from home theater speakers.Can someone help me out???
