can an hd/blu ray dvd play on a regular dvd player and still have the same picture quality?

i just got a new HDTV tv, but i still have my old sony dvd player, which i do not want to get rid of. is it possible for me to play high def dvd’s on my regular sony dvd player, and still get good picture quality? answers are appreciated!
