?how to make tv sound thru home theater speakers-hook up help?

ok the dvd home theater thing is hooked up & works fine when we watch a dvd…..however heres the prob, while watching regular tv how do you make the sound come thru the home theater speakers & not the regular tv speakers??? i guess we didn’t hook that part up…what do we need to do?? & how do you hook it up to an mp3??? THANKS!!!
