Let me break it down for you, First the light enters the lens of the camera. Inside there is a mirror, which basically picks up the incoming light and reflects it to a condenser lens. From there it goes to a prism (a 5 sided one) and then to the viewfinder. So when the user decides to take a shotthe mirror swings upwards to allow the light coming through the lens to be sent straight to the image sensor.
